Santa
Photos are Coming to Town! |
| “Ho!
Ho! Ho!” and “Woof!” “Woof!”
“Woof!” Santa Claus is coming to town to visit
all the good little cats and dogs. The Brookhaven Animal
Rescue League (BARL) invites you to bring your best friend
to Pet Photos with Santa on Saturday, December 6th at the
Woodman of the World in Brookhaven. St. Nick will be on
hand from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Photographer Jeanne Wroten will
once again donate her talents to take quality photos of
your pets. Photo prices start at $10, with a variety of
packages available. Photos will be available for pick-up
two days after the event. |

BARL
will also host a Rabies Clinic during those same hours.
Rabies vaccinations will be offered to any dogs and cats
for only $5. Dr. Mike Gowan from Brookhaven Animal Hospital
will donate his services to administer the vaccinations.
The Rabies Clinics are sponsored by BARL and the Mississippi
Board of Animal Health. BARL offers the Rabies Clinic as
a service to the community and also uses it as a fundraiser.
The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is a nonprofit, no-kill,
volunteer-based animal welfare group that arranges shelter
and basic veterinary services for abandoned and orphaned
animals until they can be placed with families. No animals
are killed just because they are unwanted. The League also
seeks to reduce the number of unwanted animals through education
regarding the value of spaying and neutering. All League
animals are spayed or neutered. For information concerning
volunteering, donating, adopting, Pet Photos with Santa
or the Rabies Clinic contact BARL at 601-757-4367 or info@barl.net.
Donations may be mailed to BARL, P.O. Box 3477, Brookhaven,
MS 39603. |
Spay/Neuter
Campaign Launches
The Brookhaven
Animal Rescue League is participating in a three year
collaborative effort with shelters in MS and LA. The program
is sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS) with a goal to gather correct statistics concerning
spay/neuter in our two states.
According to
HSUS we have recently established the extent of the overpopulation
crisis in Louisiana and Mississippi. We know for the first
time that 130,000 dogs and cats enter shelters in Louisiana
each year and 109,000 enter shelters in Mississippi. LA
& MS have lower than national average rates of spay/neuter
and subsequently higher shelter-intake statistics.
HSUS reported
the Gulf Coast Spay/Neuter marketing campaign launched
November 10th, in three test areas: Gulfport, MS; Shreveport,
LA and Jackson, MS. Thanks to high-volume spay/neuter
clinics in each of these cities – two are new since
September – cost barriers are ameliorated and the
clinics, run by Humane Society of South Mississippi, Robinson’s
Rescue and Mississippi Spay and Neuter (MSSPAN), respectively,
will help HSUS monitor response to the campaign so they
may make modifications for the statewide launch in late
spring 2009.
At the outset
of this project HSUS did not know which message would
test best. Would it be the health benefits of spay/neuter?
The behavioral benefits? The hassle of litters? The research
is clear that the overpopulation / euthanasia message
is most compelling. And while cost is a clear barrier
that must be addressed, it alone is not an effective message,
i.e. $10 spay/neuter posters.
The HSUS will
sponsor billboards, radio and television spots and produce
posters and other print materials such as door-hangers
and shelter truck magnets. The campaign will also use
“on the ground” outreach efforts.
Updates will
be provided on this website as they are provided from
HSUS to BARL.

Dog
of the Month
"Sophia"
'Sophia'
is the epitome of laid back. She's a non-barker who likes
to observe the world around her. She's 1 1/2 years old
and is almost an indescribable color - a very 'soft' palette
of various shades of gray. Even her online photo can't
capture the color. She's up to date with routine shots
and has been altered. |
Cat
of the Month
"Rainey"
Rainey
is a young male orange tabby mix with beautiful gold eyes.
He is up to date with routine shots, is already house
trained, and has been altered. |

A
Cat's Prayer |
I
ask for the privilege of not being born
...not to be born until you can assure me
a home and a master to protect me, and the
right to live as long as I am physically able
to enjoy life.
...not to be born until my body is
precious and men have ceased to exploit it
because it is cheap and plentiful.
