"In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi-human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."

Twelve Ways You Can Help

Each year hundreds of pets in need of good homes are brought to the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League. Many are very friendly, loving, and very receptive to becoming members of a caring family. We arrange shelter and basic veterinary services for abandoned and orphaned animals until they can be placed with families. No healthy animals are euthanized just because they are unwanted.

Caring for these four-footed friends takes love, time, and money. We have no full-time paid employees. Volunteers feed the dogs, clean the facilities, transport animals for medical care, give monthly heartworm preventative. You can get involved.

Twelve ways you can help:

1. Donate

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League receives no county or local government funding. Donations from caring individuals, local businesses, and foundations provide our funding. Your donation is fully tax-deductible.

PLEASE consider helping us through a one-time donation or become a monthly sponsor.

Send your donations to:
Brookhaven Animal Rescue League
P.O. Box 3477
Brookhaven MS 39603-7477

Using PayPal

2. Adopt an animal.

Dozens of dogs and cats are awaiting adoption. All BARL animals are current on their vaccinations, dewormed, and spayed or neutered. All dogs have permanent microchip identification and receive monthly heartworm preventative. Consider adopting a League animal. You will receive the gift of loving companionship.

League animals are featured on Petfinder.com, our online adoption partner. View animals awaiting adoption by clicking here.

3. Sponsor an animal's medical care.

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League sometimes accepts animals who require expensive medical care or who are heartworm positive. This potentially fatal disease is caused by parasitic worms living in the arteries of the animal's lungs and in its heart. Doodles (right) is heartworm positive. Treatment is possible, but expensive, about $300 per animal. At other times we have animals with curable illnesses and injuries. Please make a donation to sponsor an animal's medical treatment. Even the smallest donation is needed.

4. Recycle!!!

Cartridges for Kids is a fundraising program that allows BARL to exchange all kinds of items for cash! Items that we can recycle include both laser and inkjet printer cartridges, video games, iPods, cameras, laptop computers, DVDs and cell phones. Help us and the environment as well! Drop off your items for recycling at Rusty's Family Restaurant, 204 Hwy. 51 N. or the BARL Adoption Center, 501 Northpark Dr. during scheduled office hours:

Monday - Friday: 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Saturday & Sunday: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

If you can't bring your cartridges in, call (601) 757-4367 to arrange a pickup. Questions? Contact us.

5. Shop BARL's Vendor's Emporium Booth.

Visit the League's booth at Vendor's Emporium on Highway 51. Local merchants and volunteers have donated new and old items to sell at the booth. ALL PROCEEDS from the booth sales benefit the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League. Special thanks to Vendor's Emporium for donating a booth space!!! If you would like to donate items to the League to sell at the booth, please drop them off at the Brookhaven Country Fisherman (no clothes, please). Questions? Contact us.

Or call 601 757-4367 to make other arrangements.

7. Save your aluminum cans.

The League can turn your empty aluminum cans into vet services, food, or supplies. Tie empty cans in plastic bags and take them to the Hartley Gove Thermometer plant in Brookhaven Industrial Park. And you'll also be doing something good for the environment. Please note that we can only accept clean aluminum drink cans (no cat food cans).

8. Volunteer.

The League has no paid employees. Daily care of animals is handled by volunteers. There is always something you can do to help. Go to our volunteering page to get dates for volunteer events. Questions? Contact us.

9. Become a foster parent.

The League often needs foster homes for dogs that need special care. Some are recovering from surgery, some need medication. We also need foster homes for momma/kitten or momma/puppy families. If you can care for an animal (or family) or a few weeks, please contact us at (601) 757-4367 or e-mail us.. We'll provide the food if you can provide the love.

10. Buy a brick.

Help BARL maintain a clean, safe facility for our cats and dogs. For $50 you can buy a brick for our new Adoption Center, engraved with your name. Or you can honor someone special. Maybe you want to remember a lost pet by creating a memorial brick. These engraved bricks are part of the front walkway of the Adoption Center. To order, contact us at (601) 757-4367 or send an e-mail.

11. Choose an "I Care for Animals" car tag.

Funds raised through the sale of these special license tags are set aside in a special state fund to provide spay/neuter funds for shelter animals. BARL recently received a generous grant from this fund. When you buy one of these car tags, BARL animals benefit.

12. Shop iGive.com and have a percentage of your purchase donated to BARL.

BARL is now a designated “cause” at iGive.com. This means that if you like to shop online and you use any of the participating merchants, a percentage of your purchase will be donated to the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League! There are more than 600 merchants, (including biggies like Home Depot, PETsMART, Office Max, Best Buy). For instructions on how to register and start shopping click here. The more you shop, the more BARL will receive to care for needy animals. No purchase is too small, because those pennies do add up. So shop to your heart's content, and thanks for supporting BARL.
