Mission

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League is a non-profit, NO-KILL, volunteer-based animal welfare group. BARL is a dedicated, growing organization committed to reducing euthanization of companion animals. We arrange shelter and basic veterinary services for abandoned and orphaned animals until they can be placed with families. No healthy animals are killed just because they are unwanted. The only cats and dogs we euthanize are those that have untreatable medical or behavioral problems.

The League is funded entirely by private donations. We receive no local government funding, nor any funding from national humane organizations. Your support of BARL makes the difference between homelessness and happiness for hundreds of local dogs and cats.

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League Adoption Center is located at 501 Northpark Dr. in Brookhaven. We're open with volunteers to assist you in choosing the perfect pet on:

Mondays: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Tuesdays through Fridays: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Saturdays: 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Sundays: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM

If you cannot visit our facility during these regularly scheduled hours, please call us at (601) 757-4367 to make an appointment.

History

The Brookhaven Animal Rescue League (BARL) was founded in 1981 to sponsor care, treatment, and well being of animals in the Brookhaven, Mississippi area. In 1982 the League was granted 501(c) (3) status. A group of loyal volunteers has operated the league for the last two decades. Rescued animals are brought in by volunteers. Area veterinarians give basic immunizations, insert microchip identification, and spay or neuter animals before they are taken to the league.

The No-Kill Philosophy

Two decades ago the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League was one of the few no-kill organizations. Between 15 and 18 million shelter animals were euthanized then. Today there is nationwide acceptance of the no-kill philosophy. According to the National Humane Society, the number of animals euthanized has fallen to between 5 and 8 million. Still, many of these animals could have become companion animals for loving families.

“Never doubt that a small group of committed citizens can change the world;
indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”
Dr. Margaret Mead
