Mississippi Juvenile
Rehabilation Facility

3-7-09

If happiness is a warm puppy, then there was plenty to go around at the Mississippi Juvenile Rehabilitation Facility in Brookhaven on Saturday, March 7th. A cooperative effort between the facility and the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League resulted in a picnic on the grounds of the facility, which featured eight BARL puppies and five BARL dogs as honored guests.

Regina Terry, facility director, said, "This is the first time we've had something like this at the facility and it's a wonderful opportunity for our residents." She credited the facility's Friends Organization for sponsoring the event. It was the first time many of the 37 residents had been offered the chance to socialize one-on-one with the puppies and dogs.

Brookhaven Police Department Canine Officer Clint Earls demonstrated several dog training techniques with the help of several members of the audience. A number of BARL volunteers were on hand to handle the puppies and dogs, and helped encourage some of the more shy residents overcome their initial hesitations to interact with their canine guests.

"We hope we can make this an annual event," Terry said. Judging from all the tail wagging and happy barks, the puppies and dogs all heartily agreed.
